What are the changes?

Competition Age Groups

The LTA has announced that from 1 April 2020, competition age groups for junior players will be calculated based on a calendar year i.e. a player’s age on 31 December each year.

The table below shows which age group players will compete in from 1 April 2020:

Age Group

For players born in…

8U (Red)

2012 or later

9U (Orange)

2011 or 2012

10U (Green)

2010 or 2011

11U

2009 or 2010

12U

2008 - 2009

14U

2006 - 2009

16U

2004 - 2009

18U

2002 - 2009

There will be greater flexibility at 9U and 10U allowing players to compete at orange and green ball a year earlier than they currently can.

These changes will coincide with the launch of a new National Competition Calendar, including a revitalised Junior National Championships which will have a new position in the calendar. This will ensure our national domestic competitions support the Performance Pathway and can be reinvigorated as a crucial step on the journey to international tennis.

Introduction of 11U age group

An 11U age group will be introduced at all levels of competition from April 2020. This will support players with making the transition from Green to Yellow ball. The 11U age group will compete using a yellow ball, however at some levels we may stipulate the use of a green ball. Players will be able to earn 11U ranking points in eligible events.
