Help & FAQs

The current age group system provides some opportunity for players to ‘play up’, will the new age group system also allow this?

The new competition age group system will provide more flexibility, enabling a player to compete in both their own age group and the next age group up. Parents and players are advised to work with their coach to determine when a player should start to compete in the next age group up. It is still vitally important that young players compete in the appropriate age group to minimise the risk of injury and to enable game based development that can be better achieved on a smaller court with lower compression balls.

Specific details are provided in this table:

Age Group

For players born in…

8U (Red)

2012 or later

9U (Orange)

2012 or 2011

10U (Green)

2011 or 2010

11U

2010 or 2009

A player will not be able to compete in 12U competitions until they are too old to compete in the 10U age group. In 2020 the 12U age group will be for players born in 2009 or 2008.
